About Ruth Allen

Museum curator and art historian. Active in research on Roman gemstones, ancient Mediterranean painting, and the legacy of classical art in contemporary practice. With significant teaching experience at university, college and secondary school level (UK Key Stage 3-5). Previously held curatorial roles in the Antiquities Department at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, and the British Museum, London. Independent curator of 'The Classical Now' at King’s College London,'Recasting: Classical Casts and Contemporary Art' at the Cambridge Museum of Classical Archaeology, and 'Classicicity: Ancient Art and Contemporary Objects' at Breese Little, London. Holds a Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Cambridge with a thesis submitted in 2016 entitled "Engraved Roman gemstones - their iconography, material, and function".
