Background
About Ruth Joy
I am a statistician with extensive experience working on ecological problems. My major focus has been on marine animal ecology, in particular the northern fur seal and Steller sea lion populations in Alaska’s Aleutian and Pribilof Islands. I have worked in designing and testing hypotheses about the physiological and behavioural response of captive marine mammals to controlled changes in the abundance and quality of fish. I recently collaborated with a team of scientists, conservationists and industry partners in the study design and analysis of the impact of seismic surveys on an endangered population of grey whales off the coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia. My latest work has been on the development of state-space models for animal movement, and using Bayesian frameworks for investigating the link between animal behaviour and oceanic habitat with application to northern fur seal populations.
