Background
About Ruth Morrow
In my role at the Hub of Biotechnology in the Built Environment (HBBE), I explored the emerging territories of Biological Architecture, contributing to this new area of knowledge and its application. I co-lead the 'Responsible Interactions' Research Theme, which adopts a reflexive and inclusive approach. We aim to develop a responsible, integrated approach to biotechnology for the built environment by understanding the interactions that emerge from HBBE’s research activities. Our research focuses currently on: Investigating the interactions between natural systems, new and existing (bio)technologies, the built environment and cultures. Investigating the interactions between researchers, stakeholders and end-users of biotechnologies in order to capture and understand the novel research collaborations and practices required to underpin the emergence of responsible biotechnologies. Developing an expanded understanding of large-scale prototyping of biotechnologies, socially, ecologically and technically. The experimental building (the OME) in combination with interdisciplinary and collaborative activities provide the key platforms for enabling these interactions. Prior to joining HBBE my research focused on applied research in two areas 1. Design-led Material Development - manifest in research projects that bring design into technical areas of material development. Textiles, Concrete, Waste Plastics and composites. This form of Material Development speaks to new forms of architectural and design practice; practice-based research; and technological cultures and ethics. Spaces of Rehearsal : this aspect stems from early work around disability and inclusive design, using live projects and an understanding of street-level pedagogy, to work within communities in critical contexts. This work is manifest in my role as curatorial advisor to a Belfast-based arts organisation PS2 on long term projects with communities in NI's post-conflict context and in university based live projects, working with local communities to consider new potentials and ways forward.
