About Ruurd Niepoth

In the 10 years I worked as ships (Chief) engineer I gained a lot of knowledge about the technical installations on board large ships. Besides operating and monitoring the ships systems, part of the job was electrical and mechanical maintenance. On the electrical/automation side I worked on all kinds of systems you find on a modern automated industrial installation. Equipment like ABB automation, Kongsberg automation, Siemens step 7 PLC’s, Kamewa(Rolls Royce) propulsion, Wartsila engine automation, Caterpillar, Danfoss frequency drives, Napa automation, generator repairs and adjustments as well as work on high voltage and UPS systems. The work consisted of fault finding, repairs, installation of new equipment, commissioning and design of small PLC applications. I also participated in several automation projects on board. To gain more knowledge in the field of automation, I participated in the minor “ship electronics” during the Bachelor study I followed on the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz at Terschelling. On the mechanical side I worked on all machinery you can find on large ships, like hydraulic systems for ramps, winches, propeller pitch controls, but also large maintenance on main and auxiliary diesel engines (like Wartsila 9L46, 9L32 and Caterpillar 3508B), repairs on low pressure steam equipment and refrigeration systems, pneumatic control air systems, air compressors, cooling pumps etc. Because I’ve not only operated but also serviced a wide range of industrial equipment, I have a good view on how these systems work together. In my latest role as CE Shift lead at the AMS05/06 datacenter, I’ve learned a lot about the datacenter structure and operations. In the past 2 years I participated in the setup of the shift system and overall datacenter operations. My focus is mainly towards automation/electronic systems and trying to get the most out of it, thereby continue to develop my skills and learn about the latest technology.
