About Ryan Bates

I love to learn—as a student and a teacher. When I was a kid, I had a freestanding chalkboard where I’d teach my toys. I’ve always loved the idea of school and learning, although learning was never easy. I had to work for my successes as my way of learning often did not move at the same speed as the rest of the class. It was not until college and graduate school that I understood there are many ways to learn (i.e, each individual learns their own way). Ultimately, I persevered academically and professionally in the world of education; I became a history teacher, earned my PhD, and now collaborate with aspiring and seasoned educators. Thinking about little me playing teacher to who I am now, my love of learning and work in education comes down to the power of knowledge and what learning can do for anyone—putting the “pieces of the puzzle together” to understand the world we are in and where we want to go from here. As an educator and student, I love designing and implementing student-centered, inquiry-based learning that integrates curriculum, instruction, and assessment into responsive and meaningful multimodal educational experiences for diverse learners in the modern K-12, higher education, and adult learning landscape.
