About Ryan Brewer

ORCiD: I am a PhD student at the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre, with the University of Groningen, and I am interested in the patterns and processes underlying global plant biodiversity and the risks to biodiversity. My PhD addresses why some plant lineages have radiated widely, whilst others have barely diversified at all. By studying both functional traits (plant and environmental traits) and phylogenetic relationships of angiosperms on the Canary Islands, I investigate the role of these traits on speciation and extinction. I am a former Species Conservation Researcher at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, working on the Sampled Red List Index 2020 project. I have experience in a broad range of topics in environmental science, outside of ecological modelling, including molecular biology, phylogenomics, and disease ecology. I am a graduate of UCL where I undertook a Master of Research in Biodiversity, Evolution, and Conservation, and the University of Kent, where I studied BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation.
