About Ryan Combs

My background is in politics and public policy, specifically health policy. I have led several qualitative, participatory, and mixed-method studies involving groups that have been marginalized/minoritized, both in and out of health contexts. Broadly, I am interested in health literacy, public policy, health professions education, social determinants of health, trauma/allostatic load, psychosocial experiences of health and illness, and the social construction of disability, race, gender, and sexuality. I am particularly interested in understanding the health experiences of, and health disparities facing, LGBTQ communities and communities of color. Skills: qualitative research (interviews, focus groups, participant observation, photovoice) and community-based participatory research, culturally-informed research design, teaching, training, public speaking, moderating, consulting, policy development, non-profit management, and non-profit boards (including as Chair).
