About Ryan Dodge

Over two decades in public service, I've written for two mayors, one First Lady, the president of the nation's largest gun safety organization, and senior leaders across New York City government. I pride myself on being a stress-tested communicator with a knack for merging substance and storytelling. I'm currently the Director of Executive Communications at Everytown, where I've helped transform gun safety from a political third rail to a top priority for a majority of voters. Op-eds I've worked on have run in The Washington Post, USA Today and CNN. As Senior Speechwriter for Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlane McCray, I wrote hundreds of speeches, and took the pen on op-eds that appeared in outlets like Time and The Guardian. Prior to joining the Mayor’s Office, I served as Director of Press and Public Information for the NYC Dept. of Probation, where I played a key role in winning public support for juvenile justice reform. During this time, I also served as an interim speechwriter for Mayor Michael Bloomberg. I also bring 25 years of creative writing experience to my communications work. After graduating magna cum laude from NYU with a degree in English and Creative Writing, I spent two years documenting my love life (or lack thereof) for Glamour. My freelance writing has appeared in The Awl, Slice Magazine, and the Minetta Review, and I'm currently working on a book that has nothing to do with any of the above.
