During December 2012-June 2014 I was involved in a counseling internship at Multnomah University fulfilling course work for my Master of Arts in Counseling which included: Youth Guidance Association in Portland, Oregon at Son Village Residential House where clients were adjudicated through the Juvenile Court system to participate in a 16-bed program for adolescent boys for whom sexual acting out became an issue. Title: Intern Counselor This treatment was contracted with the Oregon Youth Authority. The program emphasized personal responsibility, cooperation and hard work. There was a strong commitment of returning youth to their own homes or a less restrictive environment at the earliest appropriate time, usually after 9 to 12 months. My responsibilities: Conducted group and individual counseling sessions. Utilized client-centered, strengths-based, family systems, and cognitive-behavioral models of treatment. Depression, anxiety, attachment disorders and grief were major issues. I also maintained treatment plans, case notes and diagnostic documentation and provided supervision, guidance and informal group interactions.*160 direct hours/175 indirect hours. My next counseling intern position was at Columbia Christian Schools in Portland, Oregon, kindergarten through 12th grade. I created and utilized play therapy with younger children and strengths-based counseling with older students. My goal was to empower them to develop positive attitudes when dealing with their problems.*140 direct client contact hours/225 indirect client hours I enjoyed both experiences because they were so different and required me to become versatile in my counseling skills.
