Professor Ryan Ko is Chair Professor & founding Centre Director of UQ Cyber Research Centre, an interdisciplinary research centre (70+ researchers & teams from 13 schools/faculties) working with 80+ partner organisations. UQ Cyber is currently a leading interdisciplinary cyber research centre in the Asia Pacific. Prof Ko serves on UQ's Academic Board, as EECS Director of Research, and was Deputy Head of School of Electrical Eng'g and Computer Science. He has extensive experience in senior scientific leadership, directorship, and global commercialisation roles. Prof Ko is internationally regarded as one of Australasia’s leading cyber security experts, and has advised the INTERPOL, Australian Government (Queensland Govt,ACSC,Federal) and NZ Gov't (Minister of Comms, Dept. of PM & Cabinet, Ministry of Justice, GCSB). In 2017, Ko was founding Director of NZ Inst. for Security & Crime Science, involving 6 schools in collaboration with NZ Police and UCL Jill Dando Inst. for Security & Crime Science. In 2015, Ko was awarded NZ$12mil (then largest award) by NZ Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment’s Endeavour Fund to lead STRATUS (Security Tech. Returning Accountability, Trust & User-centric Services in the Cloud)(>20 university & industry partners) as Science Leader. STRATUS resulted in several commercialisations, and INTERPOL adoption. STRATUS was awarded ‘Gold’ by MBIE. In 2012, Ko founded Cybersecurity Researchers of Waikato (CROW)(NZ’s first & leading cyber security lab) and NZ’s first Master of Cyber Security. He also co-founded the NZ Cyber Security Challenge in 2014. Ko is an editor at ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27 – the premier global cyber standards body. He co-chaired Singapore standard TR106 ‘Tiered cybersecurity standards for enterprises’ and received a ministerial commendation. His research has informed government policies and listed companies. He was invited to present his research to OECD, NZ Parliament, Korea National Assembly, and the UN. Ko has extensive experience managing global commercialisation from multinational and start-up perspectives. Ko led a team of HP Labs researchers across Bristol, Singapore & Palo Alto commercialising cloud security software, pioneering cloud data tracking to monitor breaches. Ko is a Fellow of the Australian Computer Society, Fellow of Cloud Security Alliance, Fellow of the Queensland Academy of Arts & Sciences, life member of ACM, and member of ACS and He holds a PhD(2011) and B.Engineering(Comp.
