About Ryan Marais

My name is Ryan Marais and I'm from the Gold Coast, Australia. I've spent most of my childhood in and around water, swimming, surfing, and surf lifesaving on the Gold Coast’s beaches. These experiences influenced my passion for storytelling through imagery, by combining photography and water sports. It all started with a simple question – “How do I communicate and share my experience in the ocean with others?”. This led me to pick up my first camera at the age of 19. My surf and ocean photography focuses on light, colour and geometry, showcasing truly breathtaking aspects of nature. Over time, I've migrated from the ocean to manmade constructs, stepping into real estate and architectural photography to produce striking images of beautiful residential and commercial spaces. My work combines aesthetics with commercial potential to capture the essence of a particular product or service. The images I've created has been published around the world in print media, major online publications, and various competitions. My portfolio encompasses a combination of hidden nature and elegant architectural structures. Outside of work, you'll find me somewhere in nature, whether that's surfing my local break, exploring forests on the East Coast or driving up and down the coastline searching for new places to explore.
