About Ryan Popowich

Ryan is the Director of WSP's Prairies and North Region Ecology and EIA (EEIA) Business Unit and is the Edmonton Office Lead. With between 175-200 indirect reports (seasonal variation), Ryan is responsible for the operational management of five groups (Aquatic Sciences, Earth Sciences, Heritage and Human Environment, Project Delivery, and Terrestrial Sciences) comprising seven Technical Teams: Administration and Leadership, Aquatic Health, Construction Services, Fish, Soils and Terrain, Vegetation, and Wildlife. Ryan, working closely with EEIA Group Leaders and senior consultants, is responsible for the overall performance and strategic direction of the business unit including employees, clients, sectors and services, commerciality, financial and operational efficiency, geography, key hires and investments, technical excellence, risk evaluation, and health and safety. With other Directors, Ryan is also responsible for the strategic leadership of the Prairies and North Region.Ryan has over 19 years of environmental consulting experience and has a track record of leading high-performing organizational units and project teams, and holds a MSc in Environmental Biology and Ecology and a BSc in Environmental Biology (Honors). His experience as a consultant was as a project and component manager leading biological investigations related to anthropogenic disturbances (e.g, oil and gas pipelines, hydroelectric and mine development) of varying scope and scale in western and northern Canada, including environmental impact assessments. Previous responsibilities included planning and leading field investigations, supervision of office- and field-based employees, regulatory permitting tasks, liaising with stakeholders and regulators, data analysis, report preparation, business development activities, and proposal preparation. Ryan was the leader of the Pipeline Project Task Group, a member of the Oil and Gas Business Development and Aquatics Leadership groups.
