About Ryan Sandler

I am an applied micro-economist with a broad range of interests. My current work at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau can broadly be described as studying what happens to how consumers use and access credit when "shocks" occur, whether those shocks are life events, government policies, economy-wide catastrophes like the COVID-19 pandemic, or just agreeing to a new an unusual type of loan. Before CFPB I worked on consumer protection in a variety of industries at the FTC, and had a minor focus on energy/transportation/environmental economics. My specialty is in wrangling large, complex datasets to produce useful insights, ranging from descriptive analysis on the way the world is, to sophisticated causal estimates using modern econometric methods. I'm take a lot of pride in my ability to communicate economic ideas and data insights to a broad array of audiences. All my professional career has been working with lawyers, industry experts, and other non-economists, and I have a lot of experience making the results of my work clear to all of them.
