About Ryan Underwood

I earned my PhD from Columbia University, the culmination of a life-long love of science and years of hard work. I have 10+ years of laboratory experience with emphasis in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. I began transitioning into computational biology by conducting research in the host/pathogen field using high-throughput techniques such as RNA-seq and WGS. Currently, I am continuing this transition at Salk by learning computational modeling of signaling pathways and combining my skills as a developmental biologist to strengthen prediction made in silico.I am intellectually curious and enjoy learning about topics outside of my specialty, such as physics, computers and music. Problem solving is incredibly fulfilling to me, and I am eager to work with a team to solve that large outstanding problem. My ideal job would be at a company that works to find innovative solutions to interesting biological problems. I am excited to make the transition from academic research to the biotech industry and to contribute my talents towards research that will ultimately improve people's health and lives.
