Background

About Ryosuke Ono

As an undergraduate, I researched the neuroprotective role of the antipsychotic drug, Olanzapine, in countering neurodegeneration in the hippocampus. During this study, I set up a mouse behavior test to assess recognition memory and analyzed protein expression in the hippocampus. My subsequent work as a Ph.D. student centered on the immunological analysis of antitumor agents based on adenovirus. In pursuit of this research, I genetically modified the virus and examined the impact of innate and adaptive immunities against viruses on therapeutic efficacy. Throughout my graduate studies, I successfully published four first-author and five co-author papers. My outstanding contributions in the field were acknowledged through four academic awards and four fellowships. These experiences have equipped me with valuable skills and knowledge that will be instrumental in contributing to the project. In pursuit of my postdoctoral training, I have chosen to address one of the most challenging enigmas in the field – Alzheimer’s disease. Under the mentorship of Dr. Bradlee Heckmann at the USF Health Byrd Alzheimer’s Institute, I explore the molecular mechanism of memory to combat memory impairment caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Heckmann has been pivotal in unveiling the conjugation of ATG8 to single membranes (CASM)-associated amyloid beta receptor recycling in microglia. Given his expertise in CASM, he is an ideal sponsor for the proposed project. In the long term, my ultimate aspiration is to decipher the molecular mechanism of memory and address memory impairment associated with dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease, with the aim of enhancing the well-being of individuals affected by these conditions.
