Background

About Ryosuke Ueda

I am currently serving as a Project Physician at AstraZeneca in Japan, focusing on late-phase oncology clinical development since January 2025. My journey as a physician-scientist began during my Hematology-Oncology residency in Japan, where I developed a deep fascination with understanding the mechanisms underlying immunity in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. As a graduate student at Keio University, I conducted foundational research that uncovered the critical role of NK cell-mediated antitumor effects in early antitumor immunity following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, using murine xenograft models. I also revealed the indispensable role of neutrophils in sustaining NK cell-mediated antitumor immunity (published in Cancer Medicine, 2016). Following this, I pursued postdoctoral training at the ERATO-supported Interorgan Communication Research Laboratory, where I collaborated on groundbreaking research to generate body-wide multi-organ transcriptome datasets from various disease mouse models. This work provided novel insights into selective inter-organ crosstalk and its associations with specific diseases (published in iScience, 2018). Subsequently, I joined Dr. Fujisaki’s laboratory as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University/Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. My research focused on the intersection of immunity and hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow. Recently, our work has revealed the hierarchical structure of hematopoietic stem cells and bone marrow niches from an immunological perspective. Notably, we identified highly immune-privileged primitive hematopoietic stem cells and specialized vascular domains that form immunoprotected niches. These findings, published in Nature, 2025, hold significant promise for future immunotherapeutic applications. Driven by my academic and research background, I chose to transition into oncology drug development to contribute directly to advancing treatments for patients with refractory cancers. My goal is to leverage my expertise to support the development of cutting-edge cancer therapies and contribute to the fight against this devastating disease. Current Licensure and Certification: 2006 National Board of Medicine (Japan) 2019 Attending Hematologist of the Japanese Society of Hematology 2019 Fellow of the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine
