About Saki Hutton

I believe it is my role as an educator to facilitate the children in their learning journey. All children are natural inquirers and it is our job to lead them towards their learning and interests. Children have unique ways of learning where I feel planning for individual student needs is crucial. This year my focus has been using more ‘thinking routines,’ to make children’s thinking more visible. I was fortunate to be in a workshop for Harvard Project Zero, which help us look at different ways of making children’s thinking more visibly, which helps us lead their ideas to the next level. I also believe creating a safe and caring learning environment is very important. Students should feel encouraged to share their ideas and feeling without being intimidated by others. I feel promoting a caring community within the classroom and the entire school creates a positive environment. I have had regular class meetings where students were given an opportunity to share their concerns or their celebrations with the class. With younger classes, I found having a chance for each students to be the ‘leader’ or ‘star of the week’ have help them develop their confidence. In the past, I have been privileged to work with amazing teaching teams, where we all worked well together. From my experience, I feel collaborative planning is essential in planning student learning. By sharing ideas, planning units as a team, we are able to create better learning experiences to promote international minded and life long learners.
