Background
About Sam Alkhatib
I'm currently a Special Education teacher for, without question, the best group of kids in New York City. I teach in a science classroom, which allows the opportunity for my students to become intrigued often thanks to our lab projects and our school's excellent use of electronic resources such as Chromebooks and Ipads. Every day that I go into work, I am excited to see what interesting questions my students will have. When a student approaches me in the hallway to say "thank you" or "you're a great teacher", I'm not sure if there's a better feeling out there as an educator. On top of all of that, I happen to work with some of the greatest minds you can find in a school building. My colleagues and I are constantly observed and awarded by higher administration for our excellence. Though my love for teaching is strong, I must confess: it is not my first love. Since I was young I loved film. You're probably saying "Yeah. Who doesn't?" right now, but for me it was always something a little extra special. I didn't just watch a movie once. I watched it times. I was always fascinated by how the timing of an edit can make or break the feel of a film. I loved that feeling you would get when the timing was just right. A second too long or too short and it's just not the same. Music went hand in hand with that timing. The way music sets the scene for films also caught my attention at a young age. The perfect song put in just thirty seconds of a two hour film can make the whole film worth watching. That to me, is powerful. I wish to be a part of an industry that makes people who feel bad feel good, and people who feel good feel better: the film industry. My acting skills are sub-par and though I play guitar and piano, I am no musician. Luckily, I found editing. Editing film is rewarding in that you are quite literally the person putting the pieces of the puzzle together to make what was once an idea, a masterpiece. It would be a dream fulfilled to work as a film editor.
