Background
About Sam Carter
Senior Reservoir Engineer (20+yrs) working within Shell’s Waterflood and EOR Centre of Expertise petroleum engineering team, on multiple projects globally from Aberdeen. Provides integrated technical guidance on Gas Injection developments (Gas-EOR, CCUS, CCS and CO2 storage). Provides guidance to Shell operated assets, Shell JVs, and insight on value for NBD growth options (new ventures, divestments) involving the development of remaining hydrocarbons with EOR methods, as a stand-alone objective or dovetailing with gas storage (CO2 storage). Marries knowledge of a wide range of WF + EOR integrated production systems, commercial sense, with an in-depth understanding of how subsurface reservoir recovery processes work: to identify why oil is left remaining where it is, and how to recover more of it economically. Hands-on reservoir engineer, equally adept at: • Identifying economic development opportunities; • Explaining the key issues and components of Waterflood and EOR production systems; • Managing appropriately scaled subsurface evaluation studies, with concept engineering input; • Estimating the impact of natural subsurface uncertainty and the ambiguity of data acquisition; • Identifying de-risking strategies and defining practical programs of activity. Building upon applied degrees in Petroleum Engineering (MSc) and Geophysics (BSc), early Shell career focused on the development and management of oil fields supported with water and gas injection, with operating upstream asset RE roles for the UK North Sea and Deepwater Malaysia. Covering: • FDP definition and approval; • Well planning and operations; • WRFM activity and subsequent HCM option definition; • Reserves estimation and business cycle forecasting. Before joining Shell in worked as an Exploration Geophysicist for a large multinational (BHP), as well as for an Environmental Engineering consultancy (Golder Associates). Draws upon these diverse experiences, when considering how to frame and value new opportunities that link under-utilised hydrocarbon or waste gases (CO2, H2S) with under-developed oil, condensate and gas fields. Brings interpersonal, team-working skills and operational insight developed from integrated studies, well delivery and operational experience in a number of diverse countries and environments, such as: Denmark; Egypt; Ireland; Kazakhstan; Malaysia; Mongolia; Netherlands; Norway; Oman; Qatar; Russia and the UK.
