About Sam Cogdell

I'm a certified healthcare interpreter (CHI-Spanish) at MUSC Health, an academic medical center in Charleston, South Carolina, and currently assigned to the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children's Hospital. In addition to interpreting and translation, I've also co-facilitated interpreter training programs, including Bridging the Gap and The Professional Interpreter, offered by the MUSC Interpreter Training Center. Before finding my place working for language access as a translator and interpreter, I held faculty appointments as assistant professor of Spanish language and Latin American literature at Kansas University and the College of Charleston. Since leaving academia, I've continued to use my teaching background to design and teach courses in Spanish for Healthcare Professions in the MUSC Interprofessional curriculum (2009-2012), and reconnected with the basic language program at the College of Charleston as an adjunct instructor (2012-2020). ATA-certified translator (Spanish into English), with interests in language access for refugees and persons seeking asylum; international migration, food and water security, humanitarian relief, contemporary Latin American narrative fiction, nonfiction, and journalism.
