Background
About Sam Engwell
An award-winning scientist with a proven track-record of bringing together disparate, novel data sets and numerical modelling (Fortran and Python) to understand the physical processes of geological hazards. I routinely advise UK government and EU Civil Protection on volcanic hazard worldwide. I am an expert in ash and aviation, having developed operational databases to inform numerical modelling of ash hazard, and analysed operational data (using Python and R) to assess global ash hazard trends through time. In recognition of this expertise, I sit on the WMO Volcano Science Applications Advisory Group. My work combines numerical modelling, statistical (including spatial statistical applications) and field analysis techniques, to build a picture of past and current volcanic eruptive activity, and inform our understanding of possible future behaviour. I have particular expertise in understanding the uncertainties associated with data and how these propagate through to our understanding of hazardous phenomena.
