Background
About Sam Kent
I completed my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Forensic Mental Health in December of 2020. Employed full-time at the University of New Haven, I am a nationally board-certified licensed professional counselor (NCC, LPC) in the Counseling and Psychological Services Center (CAPS). My specialty is working with eating disorders and body dysmorphia as a Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor (CIEC). My clinical approach is from a Health at Every Size (HAES), Intuitive Eating (IE), all foods fit, trauma-informed, and DEIAB perspective. My clinical work also focuses on supporting students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. As a gender-affirming care provider, I am certified to write gender-affirming care letters. Outside of my clinical position at CAPS, I am also a QPR Gatekeeper Instructor who works with the campus and surrounding communities to spread awareness about suicide prevention and how to support those struggling with thoughts or plans of suicide. During my academic attendance at the University of New Haven, I worked as the first graduate assistant for the Clinical Mental Health Program, as a research assistant, and as a BASICS Intervention Counselor in the Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Previously, my time was volunteered as the co-founder and the co-facilitator of the university’s Anxiety Peer Support Group, and outside of campus, as a state-certified sexual assault counselor through a local crisis hotline at The Rape Crisis Center of Milford. During the summer of 2019, I participated in collecting research through a grant facilitated by Georgia Tech University and NASA. The research focused on STEM-based summer camps in Georgia and Florida and how enrollment through these programs may increase STEM involvement in higher education and future careers. Additionally, I have presented at conferences including The New England Psychological Association Conference (November 2018) and The Eastern Psychological Conference (March 2019, March 2020).
