About Sam Labi

Dr. Labi is a professor of transportation and infrastructure systems engineering in Purdue University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering. He also the director of Purdue’s Next Generation Transportation Systems (NEXTRANS) and associate director of the University Transportation Center for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAT). He received his PhD from Purdue University in 2001. He has published over 100 scientific articles in technical journals and 2 textbooks used in universities worldwide. His research is guided by current and evolving trends on the landscape of civil infrastructure development, which is increasingly characterized by not only emergent threats (aging infrastructure, funding limitations, and infrastructure vulnerability) but also opportunities (technological advancements and interdisciplinary synergies). Dr. Labi serves as editorial board member for American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Journals of Risk and Uncertainty in Engineering Systems and the Journal of Infrastructure Systems. He is the chair of ASCE’s committee on planning, economics and finance, secretary of Transportation Research Board’s committee on asset management, and member of the ASCE Committees for Advanced Technologies and Infrastructure Systems. His major research awards include the Bryant Mather Award (2007) for best paper in concrete materials awarded by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), ASCE’s Frank Masters Award (2014) for outstanding and innovative work in advancing the area of transportation systems, and the Transportation Research Board’s K.B. Woods (2008) and D. Grant Mickel (2018) awards for outstanding journal papers in design/construction and operations & maintenance, respectively. In 2014, he was a recipient of an AASHTO award for best high value research for a project that investigated the economic impacts of a proposed (and subsequently enacted) legislation related to highway truck operations.
