About Sam Smucny

During my waking hours I love to learn about and build complex and sustainable systems. Most of my professional experience has been building and maintaining these types of system in the field of software engineering in industries like telecommunications, education, and high performance computing. I also have personal projects that include my own home server, running a social networking instance on the Fediverse, and game design.Whether it be watching documentaries in nearly every conceivable topic, contributing to open source projects, political activism, or music and urban design; I am always looking for something novel and challenging in which to immerse my thoughts. What makes things even better is when I can work to solve a problem by bringing together my different spheres of knowledge and in the process building a system that will not just work but will be sustainable and robust against known and unknown complications.Given my interests, it's not surprising that I loved school. I took as many classes as I could get away with, and while many of my courses centered around the STEM topics like software modeling and astrophysics, some of my favorite topics were also in literature and law classes with the only common trend being that my enjoyment of the course tended to positively correlate with the density of the subject matter. Even with all this fun knowledge, something is missing if it can't be applied anywhere, so I am always on the lookout for areas where I can help solve some thorny issue.
