Sameer practises tax law, with a particular emphasis on tax litigation. He has represented banks, financial institutions, mutual funds, and international and domestic businesses from a broad array of industries, including telecommunications, real estate, finance, utilities, and entertainment/media.He has extensive experience dealing with Canada’s general anti-avoidance rule (GAAR), interest and guarantee fee deductibility, transfer pricing, tax treaties, tax avoidance rules, goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax, derivatives, rectifications, voluntary disclosures, valuations, capital/income characterization, and dispute resolution with the Canada Revenue Agency and provincial tax authorities. Sameer has appeared before the Tax Court of Canada, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Justice.In addition to speaking frequently at events in the industry, Sameer serves as the Secretary of the Ontario Bar Association’s Tax Executive and as the Vice-Chair of the steering committee for the Canadian Tax Foundation’s Young Practitioners Group. He also acts as a mentor with the Federation of Asian-Canadian Lawyers, the South Asian Bar Association, and several universities. Sameer also volunteers extensively with not-for-profits, including as an advisor with UBI Works and as a director on the Board of Basic Income Canada Network.Prior to joining Blakes, he practiced for seven years at another leading national law firm and clerked for the Tax Court of Canada. He has completed the Canadian Bar Association’s Tax Law for Lawyers program and CPA Canada’s In-Depth Tax Course.
