The glory of man is that he is a thinking being.” As life progresses, he gains more and more knowledge. What is knowledge after all? I dare to describe it as that “know” or awareness what brings an “edge” or differentiation. All of us gain knowledge–with or without a conscious effort. So are we all equally knowledgeable? No–not so–the issue here is of retention. Not all of us retain all things – in fact no one is able to retain all things–when I say “no one” I mean no one whom we can reasonably think of or associate within the present day world. Of course, boy Narendranath (Swami Vivekanada) demonstrated a verbatim familiarity with the Britannia Encyclopedia then! Great have been such events in history when these profoundly gifted stars glittered and left an impeccable impression on our societies. These events have further endowed us–the so called elites of the modern world – with an additional onus to ensure that an enriched culture is postulated for the consumption of coming generations. A culture where in gaining knowledge is important; but more so is retaining it. A culture where ‘race’ is relegated as immaterial and unimportant–equally for all its different meanings – including racism and racing! Parents of today play a phenomenon role in not only exercising prudence in their action and words but also in developing among their children the culture of such sensitive responsibility. They need to put an end to racing–more importantly racing of their little ones. Even though some behavior may be individually beneficial, the sustainable value addition to the society is to be comprehended for bench-marking. Let’s grow our kids through their childhood–not outgrow them; let them become citizens of the world community as opposed to our narrower sects; let’s trust them that they will stand-up for the common good–not entrust them with what we consider as good for them and most importantly, let’s develop them as assets of the society–not our private assets!
