About Samira Maghool

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Milan, where my research bridges Explainable AI, algorithmic fairness, graph representation learning, complex systems, and generative AI for synthetic data creation. I publish on topics including agent-based modeling for emergent phenomena, multimodal data integration, Internet of Things, Data Quality and continuous monitoring of health records datasets, fairness-aware algorithms, and graph-based learning methods. I'm interested in modeling, analyzing, and validating a wide range of complex problems from social phenomena to the complicated structures of databases. I have been working on the propagation processes on complex networks, focusing on the evolving behavior of multiple contagions in a spreading environment for my Ph.D. thesis. I have published in Q1 journals and leading conferences (ACM SIGKDD, ECAI, CoopIS, ICDH). I have also been an invited speaker at international events on AI fairness, human rights, and responsible generative AI applications. Alongside research, I teach machine learning, deep learning, and complex networks, and have supervised PhD, master, and undergraduate theses, guiding students on projects from synthetic data generation and fairness in AI to music recommendation and predictive healthcare. Currently, I am exploring the potential of AI Agents, playing a role in agent-based models in order to simulate real-world scenarios. I am passionate about advancing trustworthy, inclusive, and explainable AI through both academic contributions and collaborative, open science initiatives.
