About Samuel Abbey

Associate Professor Samuel Abbey, is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Associate Director, and Head of the Engineering Practice and Management Subject Group in the School of Engineering, University of the West of England, and currently leads the strategic development and operational management of programmes in engineering practice & management. My current role significantly involves people management, academic leadership, and executive representation, and at the same time taking part in implementing and steering research, creating a research culture, and sharing best practices. I am a member of the EPSRC Peer Review College, and as Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering, and Sustainable Infrastructure specialist with established and growing records in shaping and influencing change around national and international ‘Sustainable Ground Improvement’ issues, combining my skillset as an educator, scientist, and chartered engineer has given me a unique opportunity to lead my subject area and beyond. With over 15 years academic and sustainable Infrastructure Engineering experience, maintaining good academic practice in HE including academic leadership, people leadership and management, executive representation, teaching and learning, research, and enterprise. Dr. Abbey joined UWE Bristol as a Senior Lecturer in 2018, where he was promoted to Associate Professor, and later appointed Associate Director and Head of Subject (Engineering Practice and Management). Prior to joining UWE Bristol, Dr. Abbey worked as a Lecturer in Civil Engineering at Coventry University and the University of South Wales respectively. His research interests include Ground improvement, Soil-structure interaction, Transportation Geotechnics, and interdisciplinary research aimed at addressing key geotechnical challenges (such as the effect of climatic change on the performance of Geo-structures) faced by the design and construction, operation, and maintenance of infrastructures. With concerns about the environmental impact of the built environment becoming increasingly urgent, my research is focusing on solving several problems that are of fundamental importance to industry and society. He has supervised PhDs to completion as DOS and currently accepting Ph.D. students across a wide range of Civil, Experimental Soil Mechanics, Geotechnis, and Geoenvironmental Engineering research areas.
