Thanks to my engineer sandwich course, I’ve succeed to access to the labor market earlier than a regular student. It gave me the opportunity to discover this amazing marine field and apply my engineering lessons in real. By this way, I quickly acquire strong knowledge about ship building and ship repairing: Cabinet wiring, cable laying and connection, design, commissioning all the whole electric systems. I’ve started my career to design main switchboards dedicated for electrical propulsion vessel. In order to optimize fuel oil consumption, those cabinets were equipped with a Power Management System (PMS), which adapt the quantity of gensets in service according to the ship load request. According to the ship configuration, we were able to run 1 to 5 gensets (Diesel or Gas) in parallel for a total power of 6MW. I’ve also managed Factory Test and commissioning on board to ensure everything is working properly. I’ve created an electricity installation department among Piriou Vietnam Shipyard. This was completely new, because the shipyard used to subcontract this job before. So I’ve selected, trained and managed a team of 30 workers, and succeed to build 4 Tuna purse vessel 90m with them. The operation was a complete success; the team is completely independent now and doesn’t require Foreign supervisory anymore. I’ve created an electricity design department among Piriou Vietnam. The shipyard also used to subcontract this part before. So I’ve selected, trained and managed a team of 6 people, including 1 foreigner. Until now we succeed to achieve more than 10 different design and more than 30 ships built. Mostly, we design the equipment layout, secondary panels and cable list, but we also design by ourselves switchboards up to 240KVA. The most difficult part was to develop the rules and guidance for the designers with low experience. Now, this task is done, and designers get trained with proper knowledge…It’s time for me to look for new challenges.
