About Samuel Barham
I research AI theory and practice, with a particular focus on large language model pre- and post-training dynamics, as well as LLM-driven system engineering. I currently lead a project that is training APL's first LLMs from scratch; and in the past, I've built numerous compositional and agentic LLM-driven systems in domains as far afield as battlefield medicine, intelligence analysis, information operations, and more. I also devote a significant portion of my time to the creation of terabyte-scale LLM training datasets - I lead the team responsible for MegaWika, which contributed tens of billions of tokens to AI2's DOLMA dataset. When I'm not building LLMs, or creating datasets to train LLMs, I teach a course in JHU's EP program entitled "Large Language Models - Theory and Practice."
