About Samuel Butler

I’m an avid learner and communicator which, perhaps, explains some of my life journey so far. Fascinated by the outlook of progress in the Life Sciences and sustainability in industrial applications, my PhD focused on enzymatic conversion of biomass. To advance our understanding and potential applications of my target enzymes, and their synergistic capacities, I amassed an analytical toolbox, including enzyme activity assays as well as analytical methods such as Mass Spectrometry (MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Much of my work has been interdisciplinary, conducted in close collaboration between departments, other academic collaborators, as well as industry partners. My background in Biotechnology Engineering, Enzymology, now transitioning into Medical Technologies, along with my creative and problem-solving mentality, has contributed to these collaborative efforts, publications, and project outcomes. Leveraging my scientific knowledge and commercial experience, I contribute to team productivity through identifying team members’ strengths, supporting them to develop and apply these, and by decisively acting on project decisions. In my projects, I take ownership and feel a strong sense of responsibility for my works and the group’s results: all the way from conceptualisation, defining the arena, and envisaged project outcome, to achievement of milestones and project realisation. My interests are however not limited to enzymes as catalysts or commercial operations in the Life Science arena. At work, my colleagues have described me as helpful, positive, and social, the latter perhaps reflected through my organisation of social events, together with colleagues, throughout my career.
