About Samuel Mathisson

I love reading the news, writing, and working with others to develop a strategic vision, and my ideal career would involve all of these activities. I also value feeling like I’m part of a mission, something far larger than myself, an inclination that led me to my first job working for the Department of Defense. As a contract specialist, I’ve had a unique opportunity to make an impact early in my career, managing multimillion-dollar contracts portfolios, leading high-stakes negotiations, and contributing to American innovation through small business contracting. These experiences have honed my ability to navigate complex systems, collaborate with difficult stakeholders, and deliver results in a high-pressure environment.My time in the Federal Government has also nurtured my interests in public affairs and policy. In my career, one of my goals is to help our government operate more effectively and to better communicate the goals of large, opaque agencies to a skeptical public. This goal has drawn me towards the legislature - my recent experience as a Policy and Communications Intern during George Latimer’s successful campaign for Congress developed my expertise in translating legislative insights into actionable messaging, writing memos on key policy areas, and engaging with voters to build trust and win the election. I also really enjoy the research process necessary for effective policy and successful messaging. While earning my Bachelor of Arts in History from the University of Michigan, I achieved Highest Honors for an original thesis on British-Zionist relations, demonstrating my research skills and ability to analyze complex historical and political dynamics. I am now seeking to leverage my government experience, academic training and communication skills in a role focused on strategic communications, government affairs, or public policy.
