Background
About Samuel Mayze
Large cultural projects rarely struggle because of ambition. They struggle because vision, governance, procurement and delivery fall out of alignment. Governments announce national cultural strategies. Major developments commit to world-class public art. Then reality sets in: budget scrutiny, compressed programmes, contractor interfaces, reputational risk and public accountability. The question in the room becomes simple. Can this actually be delivered? That intersection is where I work. I am a Partner and Global Director at UAP and Director, UAP Armetal, leading strategy and delivery across one of the world’s largest specialist public art consultancies and fabricators. For more than 25 years, I have advised ministries, royal commissions and major developers across Australia, the UK, Asia and the Middle East on translating cultural ambition into site-specific, publicly defensible outcomes. My experience spans national public art policy, city-scale masterplans, procurement design and end-to-end delivery from concept through fabrication and installation. I have directed landmark programs including national policy frameworks, Riyadh Art, NEOM public art guidelines, Qiddiya precinct strategies and major commissions delivered within complex, multi-stakeholder environments. Commercial discipline matters. Over the past several years, I have led the significant expansion of our Middle East operations, establishing a Saudi-based joint venture and in-Kingdom manufacturing capability aligned with national localisation priorities. Growth at that scale only succeeds when governance is robust, risk is actively managed, and artistic intent remains protected throughout delivery. Earlier in my career as a registered architect in Queensland, I learned a practical lesson on construction sites: unresolved risk always resurfaces later, usually at greater cost. I carry that discipline into cultural infrastructure. Strategy must perform under real constraints of cost, programme, safety and public scrutiny. I am committed to mentorship and capacity building, and I believe public art is civic infrastructure, not ornament. When delivered well, it strengthens identity, builds trust and creates lasting public value. If you are shaping a major project, developing cultural policy, or commissioning site-specific work at scale, I would welcome a conversation. Let’s connect.
