About Sandra Alba

Sandra Alba (PhD, CStat) is an epidemiologist at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam She obtained an M.Sc. in Medical Statistics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 2006, and soon after joined the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) to work on a PhD project monitoring and evaluating interventions to improve access to malaria treatment in rural Tanzania. During this period she developed expertise in conducting household and health facility surveys, as well analysing morbidity and mortality data to assess the impact of health interventions. After completing her PhD in 2010, she spent nearly two years working as a clinical trial statistician in a Contract Research Organisation (CRO). During this time she taught various courses on clinical trial statistics for pharmaceutical industry professionals as well as epidemiology classes at the Swiss TPH MSc in Epidemiology. At the end of 2012 she joined the KIT as an epidemiologist. She is primarily involved health programs' impact evaluations (IE) and monitoring and evaluation (M&E). Her research interests focus on the application of novel statistical and epidemiological methods for IE and M&E. Her responsibilities include coordinating the KIT M&E for health summer course as well as two epidemiology and statistics courses of KIT's Masters in Public Health (ICHD). She also teaches a number of classes in these courses and supervises students throughout their final year thesis writing.
