About Sandra Conn

From owning a full-service integrated marketing communications firm in Chicago for 15 years (1981-1996), I entered higher education marketing and have since developed integrated communications programs at three major North American public research universities (Indiana (AVP), Michigan State (AVP), University of Alberta (VP). In July 2012 I returned to Michigan State to assist President Lou Anna K. Simon develop and implement the second round of her strategic framework (Bolder by Design), having worked with her to develop the first round (Boldness by Design) in 2005. I am currently self employed as a communications consultant specializing in communications strategies and messaging for higher education institutions. My areas of expertise are writing, journalism, marketing/public relations/advertising, and strategic planning and consulting in the fields of business-to-business marketing and higher education branding and internal and external communications. I have also taught marketing communications, public relations, English, and rhetoric at the university level. Through my agency work I am familiar with a broad range of professions and industries. For 10 years (1983-1993) I was a columnist for Crain's Chicago Business, where I combined my writing skills and knowledge of business, government, and the arts to provide advice and coaching to business owners and leaders.
