About Sandra Hunter

Dr Sandra Hunter is a Professor and Chair of the Movement Science Program in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan. She is also co-founder of an exercise and physiotherapy platform, SimpliMove.Health. At the University of Michigan, Prof. Hunter is Director of the Neuromuscular Physiology of Human Movement Laboratory where she and her research team conduct studies to understand the mechanisms for differences in exercise fatigue and athletic performance between males and females, with aging and in people with diabetes. She is a world leader in the understanding the sex differences in athletic performance. Her laboratory has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 2004, first while at Marquette University and now at the University of Michigan since 2024. Funding from NIH and other granting bodies have allowed her to conduct studies on aging, fatigue, sex differences, women’s health, and diabetes. Dr. Hunter actively mentors undergraduate and graduate students, along with postdoctoral research associates to become the next generation of scientists to conduct cutting-edge research. Dr. Hunter has over 160 peer review papers in impactful journals and she serves as Editor-in-Chief for the journal Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews. Dr. Hunter's most recent grants examine exercise fatigability of limb muscles and the protective effects of exercise in old adults and people with diabetes.
