Owning and operating a large roller skating facility lends itself to becoming a jack of all trades. You must be able to deal with people of all ages and backgrounds. If you cannot figure out how to run the business side of things, the doors will not stay open very long. Hiring contractors is expensive, so you learn how to fix many things yourself. An HR department isn't normally found in a roller rink, so you become the hiring and firing manager as well. From running a cash register to programming the latest updates on the network, figuring out which music the kids want this week to what birthday party package will be popular, you are on the front line. This job of almost 20 years has taught me just about everything there is to know about running a small business. It has had highs and lows and looking back, I probably would have made more money staying in insurance, but I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun. Facing the unique challenges running a small business in Illinois is always difficult and we are proud to have kept Orbit Skate Center growing and bringing family fun to people of all ages.
