It was 2013, my second week in the ICU as an intern. Alone in the ICU at 11 pm, I received a distressing message from the ER— A 17-year-old girl arrived, involved in a car wreck. While I manage the rest of the ICU, the attending physician fights to stabilize/ revive her, while her family sobbed outside. The clock ticked from midnight to 7 am, and sadly, she didn’t survive her injuries. And then, after this incredible and long emotional event… The paperwork began—a mountain of it. Exhausted and emotionally spent, The attending and I have to document everything. Amidst tragedy, paperwork was the last thing we wanted to do. And we're not alone- 60% of physicians report burnout due to bureaucratic tasks- Physicians spend 50% of their workday on HR and desk work, only 27% on patient care- Around 50% of doctors lack time for clinical documentation- Over 1/3 of doctors spend significant time on the EHR at home. They're drowning in it. I saw the devastating impact on residents' lives and the toll it takes on physicians' well-being. The urgent need for a centralized data platform in academic institutions became clear. I decided to tackle a specific type of administrative burden: education management.
