About Sara Comer

I am a Licensed Master Social Worker for the State of Kansas. I currently serve as the Veteran Certifying Specialist II at Kansas City Kansas Community College working with military-connected student in accessing and utilizing their military and VA education benefits. I develop and run programs to highlight services available to our military connected students to help them be successful and obtain their academic and career goals. In my previous position as LCC's Military-Connected Student Services Coordinator, I worked with military-connected students to connect military-connected students to support services with the college and provide direct case management and one-on-one assistance to MCS, both at the Main Campus and Cherokee Center. I provide assistance with academics, career, financial and personal counseling referrals, tutoring referrals, accommodations, and disability services to aid in the successful transition from military to college life. I also served as an Academic Advisor for Student Support Services at LCC working with first generation, low income, and student with disabilities. I have worked with service members and Veterans for 8+ years in their transition out of the military into civilian life. I am an experienced transition career counselor with knowledge of job search trends, resumes, and interviewing skills. I have worked as a Career Specialist guiding and assisting clients in discovery and development of career opportunities, and have provided care coordination services for Veterans navigating the VA system. I have worked with college students 10+ years in different capacities ranging from career services, academic advising, and veterans services. This has provided a multi-lens perspective in serving students and has allowed me to meet the students where they are at and help them utilize their strengths and assets to overcome any barriers to higher education they may have. Colleagues know me as a passionate Counselor, Advisor, and Veteran Advocator who can always be trusted to get the job done and come up with new approaches. Through all this, the Veteran and student comes first and is the reason I am so passionate about my work and research. I spend a lot of time understanding the military culture, obstacles military-connected students may face in their transition out of the military, strengths they bring to college, and the cultural structure of the organizations, colleges, and universities, military-connected students will be transitioning to before suggesting ideas.
