Background
About Sara Copic
I'm a philosopher of language with a research focus on semantic competence and artificial intelligence, especially LLMs. My most recent project is focused on whether LLMs can understand the sentences they generate and what we can learn about the nature of linguistic norms from the linguistic successes and failures of these models. My work is also focused on AI ethics and responsible AI. I'm currently developing an AI ethics course for professionals in partnership with the Hurt Hub for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Davidson College, and I taught the first AI course in the College Writing Program, which focused on LLM capabilities, AI ethics, and AI policy. I also write more accessible articles about AI ethics and responsible AI at saracopic.substack.com. I'm currently a Venture Fellow with the Rogue Women's Fund, where I help women-led tech startups thrive. I also consult with startups about responsible AI development and deployment. I welcome inquiries from founders and investors. Recently I helped lead public discourse and deliberation efforts at the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative at Davidson College, and was a recipient of the Bridging Differences in Higher Education Learning Fellowship from UC Berkeley's Greater Good Science Center. In my role at the DCI, I spearheaded a public deliberation on AI and AI policy and published an AI ethics and policy deliberation guide for the public, in addition to deliberation guides focused on a variety of issues of public concern about autonomy and education policy. I've taught a variety of philosophy courses at Davidson College and UNC Chapel Hill with a focus on learner centered course design and managed multiple digital education initiatives with cross-functional teams at the University of Notre Dame's Office of Digital Learning.
