About Sara Maioli
I am an applied economist with expertise in firm-level data. My research interests relate to international economics, trade, labour, international business, SMEs, innovation, rural and regional development, and the creative economy.I am a co-investigator at the Policy and Evidence Centre on Creative Industries led by Newcastle University and the Royal Society of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce, getting to grips with the internationalisation of creative industries in the UK. I have been involved as co-investigator with the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise for many years, contributing to its research agenda, and I still collaborate with them.I was awarded the 2025 Martin Beckmann Regional Science Association International (RSAI) Annual Award for the Best Paper in Papers in Regional Science (with G. Fazio and N. Rujimora), and in 2023 I was the winner (with J. Jones) of the Best Research and Knowledge Exchange Paper at the Institute for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ISBE) 45th annual conference, Birmingham. I was awarded the 2020 Outstanding Interdisciplinary Research prize by Newcastle University Business School, and I received a nomination in 2025 for Best Research Supervisor at Newcastle University. but I didn't win! Among the many roles I held at Newcastle University Business School, I served as Director of Postgraduate Taught Education and Director of Postgraduate Research. I currently sit in the Being an academic, I love the chance I have to 'discover' new talents in students I come across, encouraging them to pursue a career in research, and when I succeed in this I feel I reached one of my important goals.
