About Sara Peffer

Howdy! I am a microbiologist fascinated by microbes, eukaryotes and prokaryotes, and how they sense and respond to their environments and other organisms in that environment. Just like the much taller, multicellular organisms (aka humans), microbes must appropriately react to their environments in order to survive and thrive. I have worked with model organisms such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus subtilis, as well as the food-borne pathogen Campylobacter jejuni. One of my greatest passions is mentoring and teaching (and reciprocally, learning from) students and working together to help them reach towards their goals. I have mentored high school, undergraduate, and graduate students throughout my scientific journey, starting with training fellow undergraduate researchers and continuing to mentor younger students in graduate school and as a postdoctoral fellow. Additionally, I have experience tutoring my peers and younger students in topics such as Algebra, Calculus, Biology, and Bioethics, as well as graduate-level courses in Microbiology, Pathogenesis, and Biochemical Research Methods.
