Background

About Sara Scribner

A librarian and writer who is strongly rooted in print and technology. Some of my librarian obsessions: YA books, building websites, teaching students to use information responsibly, and inspiring a love for reading and writing in a way that will enrich kids' personal and professional lives. I believe in teaching students how to communicate clearly to deliver information and passionately to show who they are as people. There are a few people out there who say that they learned to love books through me, and that makes me feel like I might have stirred things the right way a few times. I am a School Library Journal reviewer of YA books (first review will run in the summer) and have written about books, culture, and information literacy for Salon.com and the Los Angeles Times. As a journalist, I have written for Mojo Magazine, Rolling Stone, GQ, the long dead Dave Eggers-run Might Magazine (still proud), and the LA Weekly. My focus was music back in the day. My proudest moment as a journalist was when I became the first person to speak to the amazing yet troubled Arthur Lee of the '60s band Love after he was sent to prison. Other people I have interviewed include: an up-and-coming Elliott Smith (RIP), Thom Yorke of Radiohead (one of my favorites), Meshell Ndegeocello, Ben Harper (his first interview - 1993) and Missy Elliott. My work has been featured in two books: Trouble Girls: The Rolling Stone Book of Women in Rock and The Misread City, for which I contributed a chapter on the writer Aimee Bender.
