About Sarah Aveno

I am a drafter currently working in a small family business. My father owns a one-man machine shop founded in 1995, originally called K.S. Engineering, and now called Southwest Precision. As a child, I was always around big machinery, raw materials, various measuring tools, loud noises, the smell of grease, etc. I have spent a good amount of my life in the manufacturing environment with my mother and sister, who take care of bookkeeping and other office work. Going into college, I first majored in mechanical engineering, completing the lower division courses. Though, my calling was to psychology so I could understand people in a more scientific way. After graduating with a psychology degree, I decided to go back to work for Southwest Precision to help my family. With my experience in Solidworks I learned from being an engineer major, I became the business's drafter, taking my father's design and creating an official drawing for our customers. I have done drawings for Abbott Vascular, Raytheon, and more. As time went by, my drawings have greatly improved, even surpassing the quality of an engineer. What sets me apart from other drafters is that I work closely with a machinist who guided me to make drawings easy to read for those manufacturing the parts. Since Southwest Precision is comprised of just my immediate family, I pick up additional work such as packaging, delivering, calibration, cleaning, quality assurance, refurbishing part on the lathe, assembly, and more. Although I do not have an engineering degree, the quality of my work shows through years of experience in manufacturing.
