About Sarah Bowes

When I decided to attend post-secondary, I embraced everything Concordia could offer. I loved going to school, connecting with others and having deep conversations about the world; I wanted to stay in the academic environment and engage with adults at various stages of their lives. This is what brought me to seek employment in communications at post-secondary institutions. I am so impressed with today's students! These students (and upcoming generations) are game-changers; I am grateful to be immersed with such innovative and aspiring minds. Working for internal communications for students allows me to hear and share their stories and learn what to expect during a student's lifecycle when they are most open to receiving information and what they go through at various stages of their academic experience. Every year, when preparing to welcome new students, I reflect on my own experiences and can tap into the anxious/excited feelings students get when starting a new school. Student communications go beyond creating a nice poster or writing catchy copy; it's about understanding the audience, what they need, what they want and when they want it. I particularly relate to international students; I studied abroad when I was 18 -21 and can relate to the excitement of navigating a new culture. I enjoy hearing about life in different cultures and how people navigate new ones; my openness to their experiences has allowed me to develop intercultural communication skills. I understand cultural diversity and the nuances of cultural communications.
