About Sarah Carson

Hello! I am a social worker with experience in the fields of mental health and addictions, community outreach, and outdoor recreation. My passion is for working with people wherever they are at, and helping them overcome the barriers in the way of living a fulfilling life. I have pursued experiences where I've had the privilege of working alongside and learning from Indigenous leaders in the fields of mental health, addictions and community advocacy, and have adopted a two-eyed seeing approach to my views of social work as a result. I operate from trauma-informed, client-centred, and anti-oppressive frameworks and adopt principles of harm reduction and housing first philosophies. As a social worker, I have worked as a case manager for an Indigenous-based Assertive Community Treatment program, and currently work as a primary care social worker for a community health centre. As a practicum student, I was a housing coordinator for an interdisciplinary healthcare team, and a youth mentor and community advocate for a grass-roots Indigenous agency that worked with youth in care and adults involved with the justice system. In fields outside of my career, I learned how to work creatively and collaboratively when I worked for 4 years as a sales representative and supervisor for a bicycle retail location while I pursued education. This position expanded skills in leadership and communication, assessment, and web design as I coordinated the website platform through the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, I worked in other outdoor retail settings, as well as working many summers through my youth as a camp counselor where I cultivated outdoor leadership and counseling skills. My personal passion is for any activity that brings me outdoors, as I believe this is an important componant of being human and connected to the earth. I love hiking, biking, trail running, climbing and canoeing especially, but really any activity that gets me into the bush or on the water with good company has my interest! I also love travel and music and have many more experiences in these realms as well.
