About Sashara Eccleston

As a highly accomplished and motivated lawyer, I am a recipient of multiple prestigious academic awards, including the Karen Hugh Sam Lee Memorial Prize, The Norman Manley Law School Prize for Community Service, and numerous Dean's List honors from the University of the West Indies (UWI). With a strong academic track record, I have excelled in areas such as real property law and criminal law, consistently ranked among the top performers in my faculty. My professional experience includes serving as an Associate at Hylton & Hylton Attorneys-at-Law, where I have gained valuable insights into commercial and corporate Law, while also contributing to legal research, opinion writing, and legislative updates. In addition, my roles as a Legal Intern at several prestigious firms, including Hylton Powell Attorneys-at-Law and Townsend, Whyte & Porter Attorneys-at-Law, have allowed me to hone my skills in litigation, constitutional law, and policy analysis. As a former Legislative Clerk in Jamaica's Parliament, I contributed to policy development and legislative drafting, further strengthening my ability to engage with complex legal issues in both public and private sectors. My leadership and extracurricular involvement, including positions and membership with the UWI STAT, NMLSSA, and Rotaract Club of Kingston, reflect my commitment to service, mentorship, and community development. In addition to my legal experience, I have developed a deep passion for the evolving fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Protection, recognizing their transformative potential and the complex legal challenges they present. I have been privileged to contribute to these areas, having drafted written submissions for the first-ever Data Protection case in Jamaica, marking a significant milestone in the development of local data protection law. Additionally, I played a key role in drafting my former firm’s Data Protection Manual, ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations and best practices. I also designed and presented training materials on Data Protection, aimed at educating staff and clients on privacy rights, regulatory obligations, and the safe handling of personal data. I am passionate about finding innovative solutions to safeguard privacy in the digital age. With a proven track record in legal research, policy analysis, and legislative drafting, I am eager to leverage my expertise in both the legal and tech domains to help shape the future of data privacy and AI regulation.
