Background
About Sawyer Henshaw
I teach 7th grade English at Burke's school in San Francisco. I am also a dedicated freelance writer committed to working with companies that fit my values and passions. In life, I strive to always remain in two spaces: creative spaces and joyful ones. My goal as an educator is to make my classroom into this space for my students. I believe that students learn best when they are met with encouragement right in their zone of proximal development. Whether this means reading literature, writing narrative, or even practicing word families, they should be supported and challenged to stretch their thinking and demonstrate their knowledge. I commit to always valuing my students as independent thinkers and to view my role as one of facilitator. I want to bring out the magic! As a freelancer, I provided reading, copyediting, and writing expertise for various companies, including Authentic Education, Publisher’s Weekly, and Exposition Review Literary Journal. In the education world, I have taught multiple subjects in Kindergarten, third-grade, and fourth-grade classrooms, as well as sixth and seventh grade English. During this time, I was a member of the DEI committee, co-facilitated an affinity group, and assisted in a community book club. I completed my Master’s in Teaching from the University of San Francisco in 2021. I am a graduate of Scripps College, where I majored in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing and minored in Media Studies. During my summers, I worked as an Editorial Intern for Cosmopolitan Magazine and Hawai’i Luxury Magazine. Additionally, I wrote film reviews for my school newspaper, The Student Life. Through my experiences, I have developed and honed my skills as a highly effective communicator and presenter with strong interpersonal abilities. I am a collaborative professional with experience working toward quantitative goals in a team setting. I am passionate about books, films, and travel!
