Background

About Saylor Reinders

I recently graduated with a BA dual major in Social Relations & Policy and Comparative Cultures & Politics with a minor in Spanish. My majors were multidisciplinary and focused on developing my analytical and critical thinking skills. Additionally, university coursework gave me a deeper understanding of the cultural and political landscape that contributes to global inequality. Some classes I took included Cultural Politics in Latin America, Environmental Justice & Global Change, Women & Power in the Comparative Perspective, Social Movements, Social Policy, and Immigration Policy. My work experience outside the classroom expanded my insight into politics. I worked for the state government in the Michigan Senate and have worked for multiple non-profits, including End Gun Violence Michigan and Asociación Diomira. These roles have given me hands-on experience in grassroots organizing and a deeper understanding of political advocacy. Outside of school and work, I serve on the Spartan Housing Cooperative (SHC) Board of Directors, where I oversee the organization. I also serve on the Governance Revision Committee, where we review the SHC's governing policies and propose changes to maintain its efficiency and cooperative principles. I have been active in the gun violence prevention movement throughout my four years at college. As a leader with Students Demand Action, I advocated at the Michigan State Capitol for gun safety legislation and at my University for mental health support for students. Beyond organizing, I have completed multiple research projects that expanded my knowledge of our gun violence crisis's multi-faceted and nuanced nature. The papers include “Mexican Lawsuit Against U.S. Gun Manufacturers: How U.S. Guns Contribute to Violence Across the Border,” “Exploring Masculinity’s Role in Gun Violence,” and “Intersections of Gun Violence and Institutional Racism.” Through my research, I have learned that while laws are important, it will take more than gun safety laws to end our gun violence crisis. I am eager to continue applying my skills and passion to advance social change.
