About Scott Allan Orr

I am an Associate Professor at the UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage (within the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy, and Resources). I am an engineer with broad interests, primarily using data-driven approaches to further understanding and management of environmental risks to heritage, with a particular focus on the historic environment and climate change. I lead the Heritage, Environmental Risk and Data Analytics (HERADA) research group. HERADA is an interdisciplinary research team focused on assessing environmental risks for heritage, with an emphasis on sustainable management. We leverage data analytics and data science approaches, particularly existing and open access resources, and are passionate about demonstrating the role of heritage in tackling society's grand challenges, such as climate change, technological transformations, and social justice. Some current areas of active research include- climate change risk assessment for heritage - microclimatic effects of urban greening on heritage buildings - CFD modelling and semi-empirical representation of wind-driven rain - decarbonising museum operations, particularly energy performance - assessment of salt crystallisation risk - non-destructive testing for moisture measurement in masonry - leveraging social media and open data for improving access to heritage This work, although fundamental in nature, has also informed national and international agendas on heritage, as well as national and international policy on culture, heritage, and climate change.
